About Merritt Farm Alpacas
Merritt Farm Alpacas is located about 65 miles southwest of Asheville in the picturesque small town of Otto, North Carolina. Our wonderful 10-acre farm is centered around a 200-year-old log cabin that serves as our office, welcome center, and alpaca store. Our store offers raw fiber, battings, rovings, yarns and apparel.
We offer the finest service and support possible with farm visits always available. Whether you are gathering information, new or established breeder, our customer service is but a phone call away.
Our farm had been neglected for about 13 years when my children and I discovered it in 1996. Looking at the old buildings, we felt like we had been transported back in time. However, the ole farmstead was in need of restoration and lots of TLC. Over the next several years, the buildings were restored, the land was rejuvenated, and the pastures were fenced, all in preparation for the arrival of our alpaca herd.
From the old log cabin we can see our farmhouse, herdsire pasture and the lower pastures that house our girls, gelded males and our guard llama, Soloman.
In April 2002, our first alpacas came to live with us. Even though we have big dreams for the future, we started off small. So in August 2002, we bought more animals to grace our pastures with their presence. With the acquisition of two herds plus births, our farm is now able to provide award-winning animals to our discriminating clientele.
Several of our breeding goals are superb fiber, correct healthy body conformation and calm temperaments. We strive for consistency in our breeding program with particular attention paid to overall soundness and conformation. Our goal is for our crias to play an important part in the alpaca industry for years to come. Based on our award winning herdsires and blue ribbon breeding stock our farm will continue to produce future show winners.
Alpaca farming is not only rewarding but lucrative as well. We find that it has provided us with an alternative lifestyle that continues to honor the American farm tradition.
Please contact us, we would be happy to answer any questions you may have or better yet schedule a time for you to come visit.
